Back to square one …

I was doing really well until I did that jumping thing!
I was doing really well until I did that jumping thing!

It’s no good, I can’t think of another way of saying it – it would appear that he was right. You see the thing is, I thought I was better. I thought my new hip was all better. No more pain, no more limping … just a proper hip that worked. I wanted to jump up, to go for a walk, to do normal things. And I did! I did jump up. I jumped up as much as I could. I jumped up and stole his cooking apple when he was making chutney, I jumped up when he got my lead ready to go outside, I jumped up onto the settee when he wasn’t looking. It turns out that he was right about me not jumping up. Last Wednesday he was out and I might possibly have jumped up at the baby gate that keeps me confined to the lounge. When I landed something happened. I wasn’t sure what it was but my hip hurt. I developed a bit of a limp and had a bit of a swelling. We all hoped I had just pulled a muscle but he decided to phone my personal surgeon, Bonito, on Friday anyway. Bonito’s advice was complete rest over the weekend and they would speak again on Monday. When they spoke on Monday Bonito said he would like to see me … which I thought was nice. I went to see him on Wednesday but it didn’t go quite as planned!

You can't really see but my hip has moved a bit and is causing me some pain!

You see, when we arrived Bonito said he was a bit worried that I might have done something more serious with my hip. He wanted me to stay for the day so that he could take some X-rays. I knew something was going on because he wouldn’t give me any breakfast no matter how much I barked! Anyway I stayed and had a lovely sleep whilst Bonito took the X-rays. It turned out that I had done something to my hip. Bonito decided I should stay overnight and he wanted to review my situation with another surgeon. It turns out that my new hip had ‘slipped’ somewhat. I stayed overnight on Thursday too and have had to dictate this to him because I am unable to put paw to keyboard at the moment. On Thursday Bonito suggested that I might have to have another operation to put a larger hip joint in – even though the one I have is the right size for me. He said that there was a small chance that he could put the joint back where it should be without surgery but that was a slim chance. It turns out that this morning (Friday) he was able to put the joint back where it should be.

My leg is all bandaged up and I've got one of those flamin' lampshades round my neck again!
My leg is all bandaged up and I’ve got one of those flamin’ lampshades round my neck again!

Now we are back to square one! I have a bandage on my leg that keeps it up and the hip in place. I am going to have to wear the bandage for at least 3-4 weeks and I am going to have to completely rest for the next six weeks! I was bored before, I am going to be even more bored now! Worse, I know that they are going to be even more strict with me now. I think they are planning on turning the settees around so that there is nothing to jump on. I think they are planning to make the room even smaller now too! I think I am in for a very, very boring six weeks!! Now, I know that I have mentioned this before but hereally isn’t all that bright … was at the back of the queue when the brain cells were being dished out … if you get my gist. Well, he is feeling very guilty over what has happened. Bonito says these sort of things are quite common and that it was always a risk that it might come unseated. He says it is nobody’s fault (although possibly mine a bit) but he thinks he might have done something wrong. I know that he is usually responsible for most things that go wrong in my life, but even I don’t hold him responsible for this! Bonito did tell him that it was one of the risks from the very beginning but he still feels guilty and I haven’t been able to convince him not to!

Anyway, that’s where we are. Back to square one again. I am feeling a bit sorry for myself, he’s feeling guilty but the main thing now is that I am going to have to rest for another six weeks and they are going to be very strict about it! I know I am going to be bored but I’ll just have to be bored. I am not going to jump up, I will probably bark about it because I will forget that I have promised not to jump up. But I’m going to try to be good. I am going to try and behave. At least, that’s my promise now … I may forget that in the future but I promise I’ll try. I’m coming out of hospital later today and I know they are going to be very strict with me! So I must just lay down and rest now, must paws …????
